Overview of our 17th International Conference
January 10th and 11th 2025
The 17th International Conference on Enhancing Cognitive Functions through Mediation was held at Novotel, Sholinganallur, Chennai, from January 10 to 11, 2025. The conference began with devotional chanting and inspiring anecdotes. Speakers emphasized the importance of teachers and shared techniques for helping children.
Dr. Balasubramanian, a former CBSE director, inaugurated the session with inspiring anecdotes about helping children with learning difficulties. Mrs. Lalitha Ramanujan provided an overview of Pramana classes at school. Mrs. Hamsapriya emphasized the importance of teachers as facilitators for learners’ success. The speakers included Dr. Jeanne Zehr, Dr. Lou Falik, Pete Jarrett, and Daniella Zamboni.
The summary of the topics presented by the speakers is as follows:
The key takeaway is that we can change our thinking, skills, and intelligence. The most important step is to adopt a Growth Mindset and believe that we can improve our cognitive abilities. To assess a learner’s cognitive abilities, we can use a cognitive spectrum inventory. This inventory helps us understand the learner’s level of mental conditions and operations. It’s important to note that not everyone with attention deficit disorder has the same level of cognitive deficiency.
Teachers and facilitators can use a Mediated Learning Experience to enhance their students’ cognitive functions. This experience involves three universal criteria: intentionality, reciprocity, transcendence, and meaning. By implementing these criteria in situation-specific ways, we can help learners modify their cognitive processes and behaviors.
Pursuit, persistence, performance, and penetration are the prerequisites for effective mediation. Mediating language and communication development through self-talk is also crucial. By providing and mediating soliloquy even when there are no responses from the learners, we can help them build language and develop cognitive skills.
Developing number sense in learners can also enhance their cognitive abilities.

Rediscover to Learn and Achieve - International conference
Our vision is to spread awareness among teachers, parents and educators on why students with specific learning face hindrances in school learning. To achieve this we need to equip the teachers to recognize, and have techniques in hand to help a student, in one-to-one or small groups. In addition, mainstream teachers and school heads must understand the needs of students who are neurodiverse and why they underachieve in a regular class.
This has instigated us to pursue our mission to invite experts from the field of Specific learning Difficulties and disseminate the current trends and development in the field.
Over the years we have faculty addressing, multisensory teaching techniques, learning strategies, assessment tools, Attention deficit hyperactive disorder, teaching and planning routines for teachers, Dyscalculia, Intervention for reading and comprehension difficulties, Thinking skills, executive functions, emotional issues etc.
I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing home the wonderful two days of learning. It was such an enriching experience to be a part of the event. I shall carry the learning into my practice and also strive to become an active agent of propagation of these principles among all I come in contact with. A big thanks to the wonderful speaker Dr. Mandia. I feel really fortunate to have taken such a stimulating learning experience from her. A very, very, very big word of appreciation and gratitude to each and every one of the beautiful people who make up the Alpha to Omega team. The first thing I sensed as soon as I arrived at the venue was the warmth and cordiality that every single one of you all were wearing, just like your beautiful color coded outfits. That first feeling of being in such a positive environment ensured me from the very first minute that these will be two best days of my learning experience.
I look forward to deepening my association with Alpha to Omega

When I registered for this conference on Mediated Learning Experience, I was skeptical as to what learning would happen as I had already attended a workshop on MLE. Learning the theory is one aspect, but knowing ways to apply it makes it more meaningful. This is where Dr Mandia Mendis made a difference. She threw light on the practical side of the theory. In the process of learning, I was also able to see areas where I needed to improve as a mediator. A good conference indeed! The conference cum workshop not only touched upon ‘Mediated Learning Experience’, but made it more wholesome by including Cognitive Functions and Cognitive Map, all of which is necessary to bring about Structural Cognitive Modifiability. In that sense, the conference provided more than what was promised.
The speaker was able to put the participants at ease which made interaction easy. The whole group interacted and shared their experiences.
Looking forward to more conferences like this. Well done Alpha to Omega team!

Greetings ATOLC team! Congratulations on yet another well orchestrated
The enriching MLE Conference value added to my tools of teaching and interacting with children with learning difficulties. Dr.Mandia Mentis’ systematic approach gave me clarity and an applicability to a programme I have been practising for 15 years. The Theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and its various components- Mediated Learning Experience, the Cognitive Functions and the Cognitive Map were demystified through this Conference. The Conference reiterated my belief that every interaction can be a meaningful one for both- the learner and the teacher, the parent and the child.
Thank you Alpha to Omega for always helping us upgrade ourselves in the service of children!
